1 ABSTRACT

In the western society today there is a stereotypical belief that Islamic women are treated unequally and cruelly. The object of this report is to challenge this stereotype and the argument of gender equality within the Islamic Religion/Muslim society.

Women play a very vital role in human progress and have a significant place in the society. They are not at all inferior to men. They are capable of sharing all the responsibilities of life. Man and woman have been rightly compared to the wheels of the same carriage. Islam has accorded an equal position to women in the society. Islam realized the importance of women and granted them a very dignified position equal to man. There is no denial of the fact that God is the Sovereign Lord, the Sustainer and Nourisher, the Merciful, has blessed all the humanity with dignity and honour . Every human-being is related to each other as a all one community of brotherhood .In this connection the islamic concpet of oneness of Allah stands supreme.Islam is a firm believer in imparting equal rights to both men and women .Infact to women islam has given a very repsctable place in society and they enjoy all the benfits that a good society can give to its members. EQUALITY:

Islam established a woman's equality in her humanity with men. In the Qur'an,God says,

"O mankind! Be careful of your duty to your Lord. Who created you from a single soul and from it its mate and from them both have spread abroad a multitude of men and women."

Since men and women both came from the same essence, they are equal in their humanity. Women cannot be by nature evil or then men would be evil also. Similarly, neither gender can be superior because it would be a contradiction of equality.

2 INTRODUCTION
The status of women in the Muslim society is neither a new issue nor a fully settled one. The position of Islam on this issue has been among the subjects presented to the Western reader with the least

objectivity. This report is intended to provide a brief and authentic display of what Islam stands for in regard to women within their beliefs. The teachings of Islam are based essentially on the Qur'an (God's revelation) and Hadeeth (elaboration by Prophet Muhammad). The Qur'an and the Hadeeth provide the basic source of authentication for any position or view which is attributed to Islam. This report focuses on the position of Islam regarding the status of woman in society

4 WOMAN IN ISLAM
4.1 The Spiritual Aspect The Qur'an provides clear-cut evidence that woman is completely equated with man in the sight of God in terms of her rights and responsibilities. The Qur'an states: "Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds" (Qur'an 74:38). It also states: ...So their Lord accepted their prayers, (saying): I will not suffer to be lost the work of any of you whether male or female. You proceed one from another ...(Qur'an 3: 195). Woman according to the Qur'an is not blamed for Adam's first mistake. Both were jointly wrong in their disobedience to God, both repented, and both were forgiven. (Qur'an 2:36, 7:20 - 24). In one verse in fact

4.2 The Social Aspect

4.2.1 As a child and an adolescent

Despite the social acceptance of female death among some Arabian tribes, the Qur'an forbade this custom, and considered it a crime like any other murder. "And when the female (infant) buried alive - is questioned, for what crime she was killed." (Qur'an 81:8-9). Criticizing the attitudes of such parents who reject their female children, the Qur'an states: When news is brought to one of them, of (the Birth of) a female (child), his face darkens and he is filled with inward...
