Why we get a brain freeze
Brain freeze occurs when something extremely cold touches the upper-palate (roof of the mouth). It normally happens when the weather is very hot, and the individual consumes something too fast. |
We all love Icey cold foods, especially on a ht summer day, but too much of it too fast can give us a real headache. Who hasn't had a bout of brain freeze immediately after they throw that blizzard back too fast. Brain freeze is something which most people have heard of, but which they actually know very little about. Generally it is the term given to the feeling you get after eating or drinking something extremely cold. It tends to occur when these foods and drinks are consumed fairly quickly and it is definitely not a very nice experience! So just what is it and why does it occur? What Happens
What you may not know is that the pain actually occurs from the cold food and drink touching the roof of the mouth. It is the warming, afterwards, of the hard palate that causes the pain rather than the cold as what many people mistakenly think. So just why does it occur? Well the body is designed to keep as much heat in as possible, especially on a cold day. So when you breathe through your mouth for example, the body reduces the blood flow in the mouth in order to preserve heat. The way in which blood flow is reduced is that the diameter of the blood vessels is reduced. This is known as Vasoconstriction and once it has occurred, the blood vessels then return to normal which results in the dilation of the arteries within the palate. It is the nerves within the palate that translate the dilation as pain and that is why you experience brain freeze.Usually brain freeze only lasts a few seconds but it is possible that it could last for a minute or two. It is extremely rare for the pain to last any longer than that. Dealing with Brain Freeze
When you experience it, it can be a really horrible experience. However, there are some things that you can do...
...Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers
August 6, 2009
Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky, gives a description of the inner workings of the human, and animal, stress response. He talks about what physiologically happens to people when they remain in a state of stress of a long period of time. The immune response, depression, aging and death, and sexual reproduction are just some of the topics Sapolsky discusses and how stress affects each of these.
Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers
I chose Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers (1994) because I was intrigued by the similarities between humans and animals in regards to their responses to acute and chronic stress. As a medical professional, I feel that I have a strong background in human physiology and therefore could relate to this book. It did not disappoint. This book is written by Robert M. Sapolsky, a professor of biological sciences, as well as neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford University. As a neuroendocrinologist, he has done extensive research in the area of hormonal response to stress and their effects on the body. As a research associate for the National Museums of Kenya, he spends time studying baboons in their natural habitat and the stressors that they endure along with stress related illnesses that their environment may bring about. In Why Zebras...
...Why Can't We All Just Get Along?
The concern of weapons of mass destruction is perhaps one of the largest growing issues in the world today. These weapons are a threat to everyone; actually, they are a threat to the existence of the world, and it is for this simple reason, why there is concern regarding this topic all over the globe. " [The threat of weapons of mass destruction is] A Damocles sword poised on the neck of the human race, the magnitude of the threat they pose cannot be overstated" (Sid-Ahmed, 1). It is for this reason efforts are being made to ban the use of and/or destroy weapons of mass destruction all over the world. The question is, will the prohibition and destruction of weapons benefit the world or will it put us at a disadvantage?
If all nuclear weapons in the world were destroyed, the world would certainly benefit because the threat would be eliminated. America is making efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons all over the world. They have decided it is a good idea to go into other countries and "peacefully" force them to stop production of and destroy their nuclear weapons. The New York Times states, "Iraq has to get rid of its biological and chemical arms and missiles and the means to make them, and abandon its efforts to develop nuclear weapons" (NYT, 1). This of course sounds like a splendid idea because the less nuclear weapons we have, the less chance...

Harsh truth of life – “you can’t please everybody.” Since people have their social interests and personal qualities, you just have to learn how to get along. The benefit of having lots of different interests is that you train yourself to cooperate with multiple people. The more people one meets further along in life can uncover the other friends that are attained. Once in a while there is always one that may be funny, talkative, or elusive, but to a point it gets irritating for another which causes either an instinctive silent treatment or avoidance. Getting angry easily wards people off, even if you don’t mean to. You won’t become approachable with such an angry demeanor. There are several ways you can annoy people, even if you don’t mean it. Never expect that each day is a great day for everyone. One does not have to like someone in order to get along with them. In daily activities it is likely to encounter many people that have no significance at a personal level yet still manage to control attitude when around them.
Getting along with people can be extremely difficult at times but keeping calm can help in more ways than one. Avoid having a quick temper taking the time to relax and think before you speak. Making an effort to get along will make you a better person in the long run.

...People marry to get company that they would not get if they were single. Nobody wants to return to an empty home, which is what happens if you do not marry. Isolation can be killing. Studies have shown that isolation can be harmful to health as heavy smoking or drinking.
It is only in the movies that bachelors look young and carefree. If you see men who are single, after the age of 28 or so, you will find that they look older and more worn out than married persons of the same age. Scores of studies done in North America and Western Europe shows that married people enjoy better health than singles. They also live longer.
Take mental health for instance. Singles outnumber married individuals by three to one in mental hospitals. Outnumbering the singles however, are widowed people, testifying to a fact that the death of a spouse is one of life’s most stressful events.
However, data shows that divorce can unbalance a married individual. Divorced people in mental hospitals one and a half times, some studies shows. Single men are nearly twice as likely to commit suicide as married men. Divorced and widowed men, however, were even more suicidal than single men. Looking at this data it is worth examining why marriage contributes to health and longevity and why being single has the reverse effect. The answer is simple.

...Why do teachers feel the need to give their junior high school students so much homework? Most students feel that homework is unnecessary. Students are often heard complaining about the stress they feel over completing their homework. Today’s junior high school students participate in after school activities and find homework takes away their free time. Rancho Pico teachers should not require daily homework for junior high school students because it is unnecessary, homework can cause stress, and students will have less time to participate in after school activities.
Obviously, Rancho Pico teachers shouldn’t require homework that isn’t necessary. Many parents want their children to receive homework. However, too much homework can be counterproductive. Students in junior high school don’t need to practice everything they learn in class. Many students can learn well enough in class to master the skills without any homework. Furthermore, giving homework just for the sake of giving it wouldn’t make them learn the skill better. Teachers already assign homework when it will help students master a specific skill. They know their lessons and how much practice is required to help their students learn. Teachers should be trusted to judge when and how much homework their students need. Surely Rancho Pico teachers don’t want to create and give assignments for students that would essentially be busy work with no benefit to students learning.
The Brain and How We Believe
Authors Andrew Newberg and Mark Robert Waldman set a new scale on defining beliefs and their origins in their book Born to Believe. They take where beliefs come from to the next level with in-depth explanations of where they form in the brain and how most beliefs are even thought of. There are different types of people, different types of believers, and different beliefs in which they explainwhywe are who we are. While neurologists have been searching to find the spot where beliefs form, Newberg and Waldman simply relate the brain to Hogwarts and “looking for a belief… is like looking for a needle in a haystack” (17). They emphasize that one belief can come from different parts of the mind all at once.
Newberg and Waldman’s book is divided into three parts with the former chapter relating and leading into the latter chapters. The first part is titled “How the Brain Makes Our Reality” and thoroughly yet simply explains the power of belief, the origins, and the different types of believers. Following the main chapters is the second part in which they suggest a few more reasons as to whywe believe certain things by relating our beliefs to our memories, past, and childhood. While the first two parts are very readable by anyone who picks the book up, the final part is more on the...
...Chapter 13 – Why Do We Fall Ill
State any two conditions essential for good health.
The twoconditions essential for good health are:
(i) An individual must have better health facilities and more professionals to deal
with health problems.
(ii) All basic necessary conditions to prevent diseases must be present. For example,
proper garbage collection and disposal, clearing of drains, supply of healthy drinking
State any two conditions essential for being free of disease.
The twoconditions essential for being free of diseases are:
(i) Personal hygiene and cleanliness are necessary to stay away from diseases.
(ii) Individuals should take a balanced diet that contains carbohydrates, fats,
proteins, vitamins, fibres, and proper quantity of water.
Are the answers to the above questions necessarily the same or different? Why?
No. The answers to the above questions may not necessarily be the same. This is
because a disease free state is not the same as being healthy. Good health is the
ability of an individual to realise his or her full potential. Individuals can have poor
health without having any identifiable disease. Also, health is related to society and
community, whereas having a disease is about an individual sick person. Hence, the
conditions for good health and for being disease free can be same or even different.
...Why do people get tattoos?
Tattoos are expensive, they are painful and they are permanent. Many people find them unattractive, or even repulsive, others see the beauty in them. If you get a tattoo, you will be judged by others because of that tattoo. You may be labelled a criminal, a thug, uneducated and immature and you most certainly have some underlying psychological issues that you are trying to compensate for. People think that tattoos are just a cry for attention, a rebellion against society, or a way to hide who we truly are. Some will say you get tattoos in order to be different, yet others will claim you are just trying to fit in with all of the other tattooed people.
In all honesty, all of those opinions are true, but at the same time couldn’t be more wrong. The truth is that some people do get their tattoos to rebel or be different and some tattooed people are in fact uneducated thugs and criminals. But that fact should not lead to the conclusion that this is the case for all people with tattoos. Unfortunately, some people can and will jump to those very conclusions.
I was recently involved in a rather lengthy debate, in the comments section of an article posted on NPR. Keep in mind the article was posted in the health section and was talking specifically about the dangers of tattoo ink. Ignorant comments about tattoos and tattooed people are completely irrelevant to the...
