...The Benefits of Using Novel for EnglishLearning Teaching
In Reading Class
By: Astiara Larasati
Literature and language are two things related each other. It can be interpreted that literature is the art of language and language can use its art in learning process. Brumfit and Carter also already emphasized the role of literature as an ally of language. Novel is one of literature’s products that is full with arts. It can be used inEnglishlearning teaching to make the learning process be more creative and interesting especially in reading. These are three benefits of using novel in reading class.
First of all, novel improves vocabulary expansion and reading skills of the learners. Krashen and Coady argues that it is through extensive reading, that learners acquire most of their vocabulary, and that instruction plays a rather insignificant role as the number of words learned is concerned. In classic novels, the learners can find many classic words or combined words that create new meanings. For examples, in classic or old words, a ship is not only a ship but a sea-goer, a sea-boat, a sea-wood, or a wave floater. A sailor is a sea-traveller, a seaman, or a sea-soldier. Reading novel gradually also improves reading skills such as skimming and scanning.
The second benefit of Englishlearning teaching by reading novel is to improve student's...
...The Systems and Language Skills of English
The best teachers are the confident and prepared teachers. To be a successful English teacher you need a good knowledge of the topic. Clearly, communication with students is essential in effective teaching.
To communicate successfully, teachers must know how to structure their own language for maximum clarity and have strategies for understanding what students are saying since understanding student talk is key to analysis of what students know, how they understand, and what teaching moves would be useful. Possessing basic understanding of the nature of the language means the teacher must be aware of the history of the language as well as the structure of the language. The Structural view of language covers the study of language at the level of phonology (the systematic study of sound system in a particular language), lexis, function (communicating a particular purpose we wish to achieve in language) and grammar.
When looking at the following sentences, you can see how they are related with various systems of the language and can be interpreted differently:
• I went to London; I’ve been to London. Grammar
• Lend me $5. Could you possibly lend me $5? Function
• Library; bookstore Lexis
• Foot; foots Grammar
• I’d rather not; no way! Function
• Hit; heat Phonology
• Photograph; photographer Lexis
• Should; must...
...WHY ENGLISH IS IMPORTANT ??
Because English is the one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.
Why study English and History?
This joint degree enables students to combine the study of history with that of English language and literature. The intersection between language, culture, and history is currently the focus of active debate within both the disciplines and you are encouraged throughout your course to relate literary and historical ideas in the investigation of your chosen periods, topics, or authors. The course is centered around the twin assumptions that historical documents are just as much ‘texts’ as are poems, plays or novels, and are therefore subject to literary interpretations, and equally that poems, plays and novels represent historically grounded ways of interpreting a culture.
The joint school in English and History offers you a very wide choice of options. It is largely open to you to design the course of study which meets your own interests: tutors in your college will offer advice and help you to select the subjects best suited to your strengths. The course trains you to set different kinds of writing, in different languages, in their full social, historical, literary and linguistic contexts. You will read widely in poetry, fiction, drama and criticism and will learn to analyse and to write critically about what you have read.
A History course already...
...Introduction of Multimedia
“Multimedia can be defined as the technology engaging a variety of media, including text, audio, video, graphics and animation either separately or in combination, using computer to communicate ideas or to disseminate information.”

The jet fighters seen to fly right above the heads in the new CD games and professional quality music is issuing out of the serious business. Multimedia is no more a fancy, but a mandatory.

...the British Language Centre. Patricia’s started learningEnglish at the bi-lingual school she attended. She learnt English for 3 years but did not take any official examinations, but sees this as a possibility for the future. At school she learnt English because it was obligatory. The only other language she speaks is Spanish.
She started attending the British Language Centre (which she still attends) to help her find a job in an international company and to prepare her for her visit to Eastbourne, East Sussex (UK) in July. She will be staying with a house family for one month and hopes to improve her English and use all of the language she has been learning to date. Her reasons for learningEnglish are a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic ones. The main reason she is motivated to learn English is because she believes it will help her find a good job and earn loads of money, she also reads a lot about English culture and customs and watches films in English with subtitles for her own enjoyment.
This can also be related to her learning styles. The results of her “multiple intelligences” questionnaire indicates that her learning style preferences are linguistic, spatial and interpersonal. Her conversations in English refer to things that she has read or...
...FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING
KUMAR KISHOR BORAH
FLASH BACK:- Of all the languages in the world today, English deserved to be regarded as a world language. It is the world’s most widely spoken language. It is the common means of communication between the people of different nations.
English language learning has its own prospects. Teaching of English as a foreign language for many of our students and a second language for some in our country has not yet achieved the decided aim of free communication of thought. With the down of independence, some Indians demanded that English should quit India with the English. This demand for the abolition of English from this country was due to domination and exploitation of the British people of our country. Some other people argue that if the study of English be killed in India, the progress of this country will be seriously affected. Because of this controversy, the most important problem for us is to decide, what place should be assigned to English in free India.
Different methodologies work on different people.
English is one of the most widely used languages in the world; it is very beneficial for people from non-English speaking countries to learn the language. With so much information available on the Internet, it is now possible for people from anywhere in the world to make English their second language. There are many methodologies that can make Englishlearning easier and more effective. This study was conducted to compare the ways of learningEnglish for international university students studying at Laurentian University in Canada.
Learning another language different from the mother tongue has often been important for people, because of the reasons such as knowing other cultures, traveling, trade and religion. If we examine where and when second language education started, we cannot give a precise answer; however, it is a fact that in many countries bilingualism has always been the norm instead of monolingual. Another point is that this second language education has changed through languages. Romans were trying to learn Greek, and then Latin became popular (Charles,2003). Finally, English has the importance now. So, we know why people want to learn other languages, but the question is...
