1. Nielsen's (Boom's) opinion of a higher education is a very interesting and intellectual opinion that I myself also share. In this text Bloom's creates a very strong distinguishment between the education you receive from universities in the sense of "book smarts" whether then the skills universities lack to teach, which in Bloom's opinion is wisdom, and virtue. Bloom suggests these skills are essential in order to follow the path to the "good life". In this text Bloom subtitles "How higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students,", which in essence is a direct attack at univerisites for not instilling the proper morals and lessons in their students. The skills that the students lack have been extremely noticeable to Bloom, he suggests due to the lack of nobility and morality students no longer "fall in love", students deem only for sexual relationships rather than companionship and love. Bloom draws a strong discrepancy between the arts and sciences. He states that non-science undergrads are not required to take any science courses while science inflicted students are required to take 3 of their 20 courses in either science or arts. This allowance for the choice between arts & science is something I agree extremely on. Both these areas of education offer such similar however also different skills. Arts, allow for creativity, wonder, insight and inference while science grabs connection to nature, realism and direct intellect. I believe both areas are important for the development of a human, it offers a type of well roundedness and intellectual ability in all aspects of life. The pedagogy of play can be hard to understand and part of the reason for this is it’s so difficult to explain how children learn by play because play isn’t simply; it is complex. Each child begins their early childhood education with a set of skills and prior knowledge that is influenced by their family, culture and past experiences (Fellows &Oakley, 2010). The past knowledge should become the foundation for developing an understanding of scientific concepts (Duschl, Schweingruber & Shouse, 2007). Children are naturally inquisitive, creative and aware of the world around them (Campbell & Jobling, 2012). Play is an important development tool and an effective way to teach children scientific concepts while using their prior knowledge (Preston, Mules, Baker & Frost, 2007). Learning science through play shows children that science is useful and enjoyable and is a significant aspect of the real world (Bulunuz, 2013). In the debate over sex education, one thing is undeniable: the average kid today is immersed in sexual imagery. A generation that has grown up on the sordid details of the Starr Report, watched thong-clad teens gyrate on Spring Break cable specials, or see the cover of virtually any women’s magazine in the grocery checkout line is familiar with the facts of life. Young people face a barrage of confusing messages. Along with titillating images from the media, some kids are told to “just say no” to sex. Kids are becoming more sexually active at an earlier age. Adolescents usually derive information on sex and related subjects from sources like friends, books, the media comprising advertising, television, magazines and the internet. The problem is that these sources may or may not provide them correct and accurate information. As such, sex education will help in transferring authentic information, and in the process also correct any misinformation that they may have apart from adding to their already existing knowledge. Sexual education needs to be imparted at the numerous school levels and home to educate youth on the important facts about sex such as pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, contraceptives, peer pressures of having sex, and various other issues.

I think that the purpose of education is to get the children ready for real life, and provide them the learning skills, and abilities that they will need.
2. What are schools for? To teach skills and subjects? To encourage personal self-definition? To develop human intelligence? To create patriotic, economically productive citizens?
Schools’ purposes are major in every culture all around the world. In my eyes, schools are to educate the general public, young or old for survival in the next chapter in their life, a degree. They are taught the basic skills and subjects to maneuver on to college, or to start life. After the basics, they are taught more in depth skills and subjects. Schools aren’t good just for that. Essay 3: The EducationDebate
Wouldn’t school be great if we could make our own schedules? Not just picking out classes from pre-selected schedules, actually doing everything when it’s convenient for us. That’s exactly how it works when taking online courses. Online education is a great option for individuals who can’t participate or don’t prefer to participate in classroomeducation. I’ve successfully done it myself.
Online and classroom education both have the same goal; to teach the content of the selected courses to the students and to help the student to understand and pass the course. Now the instructors obviously can’t go about it the same way, there has to be different teaching styles to reach the end goal. Traditional education requires in person attendance in class on a pre-selected schedule. Some students live in dorms and spend a lot of time on campus. There is more opportunity to join clubs, associations & fraternities. All the resources that the school has are readily available during the day for campus students. Online education, or distance learning, consists of taking classes via internet. It is flexible and convenient because there’s no set schedule other than assignment due dates. A student can work on assignments and study any time of the day that works for them. Distance learners don’t...
