Defined in simplest terms, research is searching for and gathering information, usually to answer a particular question or problem. Research projects of various types and complexity are an integral part of the college experience and offer you the opportunity to learn a valuable set of skills. Research is defined as human activity based on intellectual application in the investigation of matter. The primary purpose for applied research is dicovering, interpreting and the development of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge on a wide variety of scientific matter of our world and the universe. Research means to a search for a knowledge. Research as a scientific & systematic search for information on a specific topic. “There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after. “To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism, to steal ideas from many is research. “ research is creating new knowledge”- neil Armstrong
If you steeal from one author, its plagiarism; if you steal from many its research-wilson mizner The Writing Process
Prewriting is anything you do before you write a draft of your document. It includes thinking, taking notes, talking to others, brainstorming, outlining, and gathering information (e.g., interviewing people, researching in the library, assessing data). Drafting occurs when you put your ideas into sentences and paragraphs. Here you concentrate upon explaining and supporting your ideas fully. Here you also begin to connect your ideas. Regardless of how much thinking and planning you do, the process of putting your ideas in words changes them; often the very words you select evoke additional ideas or implications. Revising1. Revision is the key to effective documents. Here you think more deeply about your readers’ needs and expectations. The document becomes reader-centered. How much support will each idea need...

CHAPTER 2 (Page 57)
1. Distinguish among the following sets of items, and suggest the significance of each in a research context:
a. Concept and construct – A concept is a generally accepted collection of meanings or characteristics that are concrete whereas a construct is image or idea invented for a particular theory or research problem; a construct is an abstract concept. To successfully perform a research, we must form common ground; hence, the need for concepts and constructs.
b. Deduction and induction – a deduction is a conclusive inference while an induction is a conclusion from one or more pieces of evidence.
c. Operational definition and dictionary definition – an operational definition is a definition based on measurement criteria that have empirical reference while a dictionary definition is based on synonyms.
d. Concept and variable – a concept is a generally accepted collection of meanings or characteristics associated with certain events while a variable is value or set of values related to a property being studied.
e. Hypothesis and proposition – A hypothesis is a is a declarative statement that states a belief while a proposition is a statement about concepts that may be regarded as true or false.
f. Theory and model – a theory is a...
...DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
Perhaps one of the basic ways to define a word is by looking into its etymology:
Research is derived from the French word recherché, from recherchér where chercher means “to search” while its literal meaning is “to investigate thoroughly”.
Another way is from the component of the word itself:
Research is composed of two syllables: re, a prefix meaning again, repeat, or over again and search, a verb which means to examine closely and carefully, a quest for something, that is research may mean a continuous and recurring studies.
Further, the dictionary classifies research as a noun that involved studying something or trying to find out facts about it through scholarly or scientific investigation. Research is also synonymous to a quest for knowledge, data or truth.
Below are more several technical definitions for the term research:
• A process of scientific thinking that leads to the discovery of establishment of new knowledge or truth. It is not subjective expression of ideas or opinions (Isidro and Malolos, 1979).
• The careful, unbiased investigation of a problem, based in so far as possible, upon demonstrable facts and involving refined distinctions, interpretations, and usually some generalizations (Good, 1956).
• The systematic and objective analysis and recording of controlled observations that may lead...

Professionals in any field may be required to research a specific topic and explain that topic. This includes Criminal Justice Professionals as well. Professionals working in the Criminal Justice System will more than likely be responsible for many research projects and knowing the process necessary to complete such a successful research project is the first step toward success in this field. There are also many terms used by researchers that need to be defined. This paper’s purpose is to explain that process and define some of the most commonly used terms.
It is all in the Process
The first step in the research process is the inception, or creation of the research idea. Without the research idea there is no point in conducting research. The research idea includes the primary topic of the research, any sub-topics that may apply to the situation, and the reason the research is needed. Research can be conducted on any topic and can be conducted for any reason deemed necessary. Personal research ideas should cover topics that interest the person conducting the research, whereas professional research should cover...

What does it mean to have beauty? What is beauty really? Questions like these can be explained through the definition of beauty. The problem is that beauty in today’s society has acquired multiple meanings. How many times has one heard the phrase, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, or how about, beauty is on the inside? These happen to be common misconceptions. The true definition of beauty is ironically hidden behind a mask of deception. Glancing through history brings to light the harsh reality of what beauty was and still is today. Individuals need to look beyond the common myth that beauty is merely subjective. Beauty is a perceptual quality that is a product of innate human design. Love it or hate it, from the moment you opened your eyes, beauty was already defined.
Going back in time and reviewing the evolution of beauty demonstrates the definition, as well as disproving beauty is merely subjective. The Darwin theory of beauty is scientific evidence that there is a reason for universal aesthetic pleasure. Dennis Dutton, a scientist and philosopher states, “Beauty is an adaptive effect in which we extend and intensify in the creation of works of art and in the identification of human beings.” Dutton pronounced this statement after studying the universality of beauty across a wide range of topics. It is impossible that humans all perceive the same qualities as unique and aesthetically...
...OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH METHODS
Definition of Research
a) The word "research" is derived from the Latin word meaning "to know."
b) Research is about answering questions, such as:
What do I want to know?
How do I want to gain knowledge?
Why do I want to know it?
c) Research as a collection of methods, tools, and techniques forms the basis
for most research texts and courses inresearch; its methods are what set it
apart from other ways of acquiring knowledge.
d) Research means looking again. To research mean to take another more
careful look/find out more.
e) Technical definition of research
• Research is systematic enquiry aimed in providing information to solve problems,
research can also be defined as system enquiry that provide information to guide
• Business research is the systematic and objective process of gathering, recording, and
analyzing data to investigate specific problems for aid in making business decisions.
(Sekaran 2002; Zikmund 2003 p.6)
• In marketing research is defined as systematic and objective process of identification,
collection of data, analysis and dissemination of information to provide solution to
marketing problems/business problems
Science and the Scientific Approach
Experimental research is commonly used in sciences such as sociology and psychology, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine etc.
Experimental research tests a hypothesis and establishes causation by using independent and dependent variables in a controlled environment.
Experiments are generally the most precise studies and have the most conclusive power. They are particularly effective in supporting hypotheses about cause and effect relationships. However, since the conditions are artificial, they may not apply to everyday situations.
A well designed experiment has features that control random variables to make sure that the effect measured is caused by the independent variable being manipulated. These features include random assignment, use of a control group, and use of a single or double-blind design.
An experimenter decides how to manipulate the independent variable, but only measures the dependent variable. In a good experiment, only the independent variable will affect the dependent variable.
Random assignment of subjects to experimental and control conditions is a process used to evenly distribute the individual qualities of the participants across the conditions.
The aspect or subject of an experiment that is influenced by the manipulated aspect; an outcome measured to see the effectiveness of the treatment

In accord with international copy write laws, no photocopied texts will be allowed in the classroom.
Turn off cell phones and pagers. If there is an emergency notification necessity, inform me before that particular class. Texting, looking at texts, checking to see who texted or called, answering calls, etc. are all forbidden during class. It is an uncivil practice that detracts from the goal of learning during the limited class time we have. “Surfing” the web when you are supposed to be investigating course-related information is prohibited: I will ask you to leave class and record an absence for you if are doing so.
MDIS requires that you attend 90% of the meetings of this module. That equates to one missed day. Being on time is important too. Under these rules, there are no excused absences. Missing class for any reason is an absence. If you are late to the start of class you will miss quizzes and points. If you miss significant parts of the class before or after the break you will earn an absence for ½ a period.
Overview: Research methodology is the applied technology of scientific thinking and you cannot master this without understanding and practicing the style of critical thinking called “scientific”. The kind of thinking has also been...
...and Feasibility Paper:
As preparation for the final research paper, formulate a theory about the correlation between measurable independent variables (causes) and one measurable dependent variable (the effect). Be sure to have at least two independent variables for proposed research paper. The topic proposal should include the following four items which serve as the foundation for the final research paper after instructor feedback is given.
1) Purpose Statement
In one paragraph, state the correlation and identify the primary independent variables.
State the correlation as in the following:
“The dependent variable _______ is determined by independent variables ________, _________, ________, and ________.”
Identify and defend the “primary” independent variable, or the variable believed to have the strongest impact on the dependent variable:
“The most important independent variable in this relationship is ________ because _________.”
2) Definition of Variables
For each variable, write a single definition paragraph talking about the variable. Paragraphs should be in this order: dependent variable, primary independent variable, and three independent variables.
In addition to defining the independent variables, defend why each determines the dependent variable.
For the primary independent variable, at...
