Media Reaction: Immigration Proposal
* Illegal immigration has been a problem in the United States since the late nineteenth century. A federal law was passed barring entry to all convicts and prostitutes. Before then, immigration was scarcely controlled. Over centuries different laws were passed in attempt to get the situation under control. Once the Immigration Law passed, legal immigration increased, while illegal immigration kept going right along with it. Since then, Congress has passed seven amnesties. Today, more than a million immigrants enter our country legally every year. Illegal aliens increase by about 500,000 every year. Majority of the people that come to the United States illegally are from Mexico and other Latin American countries. Almost half of the illegal immigrants now living in the United States didn’t leave when their visas expired. American citizens are deeply concerned about the negative impact that illegal immigration has on issues such as increased crime, overcrowded schools, and bankrupted hospitals. Despite disapproval to illegal immigration and amnesty, border advocates are leaning towards President Obama to pass mass amnesty for illegal aliens. * A proposal was drafted that will give illegal residents the opportunity to become permanent within eight years. According to the draft, the plan will make available additional security funding and necessitate business owners to review the immigration status of new hires within four years. Illegal immigrants will able to apply for a newly created visa under the bill. If approved, the same legal status may also be applied to the spouses and children residing outside of the country. The core provisions are likely to include a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, new visa programs for low- and high-skilled workers and for agricultural workers, a 3
