TOPIC OVERVIEW
Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) report, Education at a Glance (2012), says 30% on average of adults in OECD countries have tertiary level education. According to the report, attainment of higher education has increased tremendously over the past 30 years. Universities and higher institutions are driven to engage in a strategic planning process by so many forces. Some of these forces includes, increasing demand for higher education as a result of decline in government funding, greater accessibility and transparency, technological changes, changing student demographic etc. It is therefore necessary for higher institutions to involve in strategic planning process so as to face these upcoming challenges. It is also apparent that those institutions that are not willing or able to change to meet those challenges may risk been faced with failure or total collapse. As Fallon argues: “it is a fundamental point of the new paradigm that we cannot expect the outside to organize itself to meet our needs” Keynote(2013), predicts that the number of students participating in further or higher education will decrease between the academic year 2012/2013 and 2016/2017 which is an estimate of 10.5% drop over the forecast period. Student numbers also expected to decrease by 3.7%.
