Many females can relate to “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, not only through childhood experiences but also through society’s view on women today. The mother may seem strict and overbearing but has reason to do so due to her fear of her daughter becoming a slut. With the theme as fear of the community’s judgment, her mother not only gives her advice on how to be a proper woman, but also ways to maintain a proper household and how to behave around other people. With experience of being a mother, the mother takes action as she notices her daughter’s actions might lead up to her innocence being lost. As the mother gives instructions specifically, she not only wants the best for her daughter but also fears that her daughter is soon to be a slut based on her current actions. The mother questions her daughter if she sings Calypso music in Sunday school, and with the daughter’s defensive response it might imply that she does. Throughout the piece, the mother mentions slut numerous times implying that she fears her daughter is heading that direction. The mother also gives instruction on how to make medicine to “throw away a child before it even becomes a child”(p104). Instead of lecturing her daughter about abstinence, she shows her a way to abort a child, which might suggest that the mother is doubtful if the daughter will take in what the mother has instructed to avoid being a slut. The mother also gives instructions on how to maintain a proper household such as washing clothes, making medicine, cleaning a house, and growing vegetables. The mother lectures her daughter about a proper household because she clearly cares about her reputation. Not only does a proper household indicate responsibility as a young lady, but the mother might be using this technique as a way to steer her daughter away from sexuality by keeping her productive.
