Fort Hood Shooting
Brief Description of Attack
On November 5, 2009 at approximately 1:30 p.m., a gunman opens fire inside the base's Soldier Readiness Center at U.S. Army Base, Fort Hood, Texas. Soldier Readiness Center, is where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening (http://search.proquest.com). During the shooting the gunman killed 13 and wounded 31 others. The gunman was shot and wounded by base police during the incident. This was the first time that an attack like this has happened in a military base on U.S. soil. All the soldiers and civilians inside of the Soldier Readiness Center were unarmed at the time of the attack. After the shooting the gunman was identified as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan a U.S. Army psychiatrist who was also scheduled to deploy overseas. Witnesses stated that Hasan, shouted "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is great") before he began his shooting rampage (http://search.proquest.com). The term “Allahu Akbar" is commonly used by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, when they are about to attack against U.S. troops or Coalition Forces overseas. Witnesses further stated that Hasan stopped to reload his weapon and then continued shooting until he was shot by base police. Before the gunman was shot several soldiers inside the Soldier Readiness Center, throw tables and chairs at the gunman in an attempt to stop him. It is believed that Hasan used a FN Herstal Five-seveN tactical pistol that he had bought legally at a gun store in Killeen, Texas. The FN Herstal Five-seveN tactical pistol fires a 5.57 mm round and the magazine for the pistol holds up to 20 rounds. Attack Classifies as a Terrorist Attack
The Fort Hood shooting was considered an act of terrorism because of the fact that Hasan had pervious been in contact with Anwar al Awlaki, an American-born cleric radical leader from Virginia, who lived in Yemen. Awlaki was believed to run a web site that promoted jihad around the world against the U.S. He is also believed to have helped hide two of the 9/11 hijackers (http://abcnews.go.com). Awlaki is also believed to have ties to Al Qaeda and was under investigation by the San Diego FBI Office. In December 2008, during a counter terrorism investigation FBI Agents from the San Diego’s Joint Terrorism Task Force intercepted messages between Hasan and Awlaki. A total of about 20 messages were exchanged between Hasan and Awlaki. In one of the messages Hasan asked the cleric for his thoughts on American Muslim soldiers killing their non-Muslim counterparts (http://statesman.com). Hasan further asked if the American Muslim soldiers would because shaheeds (martyrs), if they killed there non-Muslim counterparts. These emails raised many red flags and concerned the San Diego Agents. They forwarded the case to agents in Washington, where Hasan was then stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (http://statesman.com). During the investigation the U.S. Army was contacted by the FBI, and they were informed of Hasan emails and contact with Awlaki, a suspected Al Qaeda supporter. The FBI’s investigation determined that Hasan’s contact with Awlaki was in accordance with research that he doing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Some of the emails that Hasan exchanged seemed to be asking for guidance from Awlaki on how to find a Muslim wife. Other emails were about how he disapproved of the war on terror, because Muslims were being killed by non-Muslims. During the investigation Hasan was never questioned. Investigator believed that they did not have enough information to question Hasan and if the contacted Hasan’s Chain of Command, it could ruin his military career. Many of Hasan’s coworkers had expressed concerns about Hasan’s beliefs and further stated to investigators after the shooting that his thought and views towards the war on terror were...
The FortHood massacre, like all things, has a before, a during, and an after. Before the shooting, people were going about their day as if nothing were new. During the shooting, people became the people they were meant to become. After the shooting, people felt the pain of loss; they thanked God, and they moved on. “I just thank God he missed me” (CNN). “Unit at FortHood deploying a month after shootings” (Fox).
The morning before the shooting took place, everyone woke up to what was supposed to be a normal day. Families prepared for work and school. Police officers reported to duty and got their bagels, like every other day. Major Nidal Malik Hasan instead prepared to kill. He went about it in an odd, meticulous manner. “Major Nidal Malik Hasan cleaned out his apartment, gave leftover frozen broccoli to one neighbor and called another to thank him for his friendship- common courtesies and routines of the departing soldier”(Yahoo). Major Hasan was to be deployed to Afghanistan to assist soldiers with combat stress. He had made it known that he did not like the fact that he would be fighting against his own people.
Major Hasan calmly walked into a military processing center at FortHood, Texas and...
Who were the main characters? The main characters in this film are Tre, Doughboy, and Doughboy’s brother Ricky.
Describe each main character's role? Tre was a troubled child with lots of anger, and a strong temper, but had both a mother and father that loved him and took interest in him. His mother and father wanted the best for Tre and took a strong involvement in his life, trying to install good vs.hood to speak. Tre was a good kid, with a heavy conviction to do what was right, and to go down the right path and pursue bigger things then “the hood”.
Doughboy was raised by a single mom. She didn’t show interest, nor gave any discipline to Doughboy. He was your standard high school drop out, lazy drug dealing, gun wearing, 40 drinking gangster. Fell right in line with what is expected out of someone growing up in the hood with poor parenting, and just trying to make a name in the hood.
Ricky had lots of potential with hopes and dreams to get out of the hood unlike his brother. He was an all-star athlete with a scholarship to USC, seeking to make a name for himself but trouble followed him due to his upbringing and surroundings.
Did you notice any stereotypical portrayals of the group being examined? This film was filled with stereotypical portrayals of an all black violence filled community from start to finish....

Forte Hotel Design

Forte Executive Innes
Forte Hotels, a large European hotel chain, is developing a new hotel chain in the United States. The chain, named Forte Executive Innes, will combine the ambiance of a European hotel with American functionality and convenience. Forte decided to invest in this hotel chain partly to take advantage of the increasing numbers of business people traveling from Europe to the United States.
Forte Hotels is the United Kingdom’s largest hotel chain. Its hotel brands include Le Meridien, Forte Crest, Forte Posthouse, Forte Agip and Forte TraveLodge. In addition, Forte Hotels includes an international group of 80 upscale hotels such as the Watergate Hotel, Washington, D.C.; Hyde Park Hotel, London; and King Edward Hotel, Toronto. Recently the company’s chairman, Sir Rocco Forte, announced that he plans to sell the TraveLodge chain in the United States. In its place, Forte Hotels will develop a new chain targeted toward European and American business travellers, Forte Executive Inne. Forte’s strategy in developing the new chain is twofold. European business travellers in the United States will recognize the Forte name and associate it with comfort and service. Forte executives also expect that American business travellers will associate the new chain with “pampering” that is often lacking in the...
...could have or would have ever imagined that this simple night out would end it warm blood and wet tears. The recent shooting in Aurora, Colorado is only another example of the repeating violence in the United States. Many blame these psychotic killings on the violence our children grow up with in the media and toys. “Shootings” by Adam Gopnik, expresses the views of others such as me, who believe that the blame on these shooting is not on the media, rather on the lack of control and actions the government takes to prevent further massacres.
Violence is inevitable. Some of the greatest psychological researchers have stated that the human mind is driven by the desire for sex and violence. The well-known book, Lord of the flies by William Golding, as well as many twentieth century movies, is based on this concept. In his article, Gopnik analyzes mass massacres in other countries and compares them to those of the United States. Although the other countries look down on the United States, they do not take the time to compare their past killers to those in the U.S. As Gopnik states, “Every nation has violent loners, and they tend to have remarkably similar profiles from one country and culture to the next.” This statement simply means that our culture has nothing to do with the violence we hear about all over the news. Part of the blame lies further than the shooting games and action movies our kids watch on television,...
In “shootings”, Adam Gopnik speaks about a shooting that took place in Virginia Tech Engineering building, and how the parents of the victims were told that it was not the right moment to ask questions. Gopnik also gives his points of view on how the shooting could have been avoided. Gopnik suggests that the main reason why these types of incidents keep happening in the United States is because there is a lack of security and requirements on who should not be able to buy a gun. The government should do what others countries are doing, and Gopnik’s example, is the massacre that happened in Paris Suborn of Nanterre in 2002, when a man killed eight people at a municipal meeting. Gun control became a key issue in the presidential election that year, and there has been no repeat incident.
I agree Gopnik. The government should do something to avoid having just anyone walk into a gun store and buy a gun without worrying if they have a mental illness. I think people should have stricter requirements to be able to own a gun; for example, if you are a police officer then a gun is a necessity. If you are just a normal citizen, you should have to demonstrate that you are capable of taking on the responsibility of gun ownership. This could save so many innocents lives and avoid many of the everyday incidents that happen in this country. I agree with Gopnik because he states that the government is not doing enough...
Fort Clatsop was the encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (Corps of Discovery) in the Oregon Country. Located near the mouth of the Columbia River this site served as their camp from December 8, 1805 until their departure on March 23, 1806. Fort Clatsop is located along the Lewis and Clark River at the north end of the Clatsop Plains approximately 5 miles southwest of Astoria, the fort was the last encampment of the Corps of Discovery before embarking on their return trip east to St. Louis. Now the site is known as the Fort Clatsop National Memorial.
The Historical Site
Upon the Corps of Discovery departure in March 1806, the fort rapidly decayed in the wet coastal forest of the western Oregon region, but was reconstructed in 1955 from sketches in the journals of William Clark. The National Park Service maintains a replica fort within the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park that is believed to sit on, or near the site of the original fort. The original fort, however, has not been seen since the mid-19th century and, despite efforts, remains of the fort continue to elude archaeologists. Archaeologists working at the site over the past six decades have described countless subsurface “pit” and “lens” features, variously interpreted as fire hearths and trash or privy pits, and sometimes interpreted as...
...|Golkonda Fort |
The 13th century Golconda Fort was built by the Kakatiya kings. In the 16th century, Golkonda was the capital and fortress city of the Qutb Shahi kingdom, near Hyderabad. The city was home to one of the most powerful Muslim sultanates in the region and was the center of a flourishing diamond trade.
Golkonda was located 11 km west of the city of Hyderabad. According to a legend, the fort derives its name from Golla Konda, which is a Telugu word for Shepherd's Hill. It is believed that a shepherdboy came across an idol on the hill. This led to the construction of a mud fort by the then Kakatiya dynasty ruler of the kingdom around the site.
The city and fortress are built on a granite hill that is 120 meters (400 ft) high and is surrounded by massive crenelated ramparts. The beginnings of the fort date to 1143, when the Hindu Kakatiya dynasty ruled the area. The Kakatiya dynasty were followed by the state ofWarangal, which was later conquered by the Islamic Bahmani Sultanat. The fort became the capital of a major province in the Sultanate and after its collapse the capital of the Qutb Shahi kings. The fort finally fell into ruins after a siege and its fall to Mughal emperor Aurangazeb.
After the collapse of the Bahmani Sultanat, Golkonda rose...
