Text Preview “Compare how the women in black and the awakening use conventions of the gothic horror” This essay will entail a comparison of the conventions of gothic horror apparent in the films Women in Black and The Awakening, both films have created a gothic horror by using the conventions in similar and different ways. Firstly the characters have been portrayed in a certain way in both films to fit gothic horror, the characters are extremely vulnerable which is often present in gothic horrors, this is so to make the emotional pain for the audience worse as the character has tragically lost a loved one. In both instances; Arthur Kipps has lost his wife and Florence Cathcart lost her husband, both characters are grieving and not emotionally stable making them an easy target and makes us feel sad for character. Both Arthur and Florence are emotionally unstable and are trying to make themselves re-join society after tragic events, Florence has a connection with the ‘villain’ whereas Arthur is has no connection to the ‘villain’ Ghost are a large convention of gothic horror and used in both of the two films, used as the scare factor as they are different and feared In both the films the ‘villain’ is the outsider, in The Awakening the child cannot be seen by anyone whereas in Women in Black the ‘villain’ has been separated from her child and has promised to “never forgive” The weather was a very important convention used in a number of ways in both of the films to create different feelings, the women in black used low key lighting constantly throughout the film however the awakening did not use the low key lighting as often, yet both films used a grey colour filter to add an eary also showing the British background of the film as Britain has that sort of colour.
