There is no way to thoroughly enumerate the various ways in which children around the world are economically exploited and physically mistreated. But the numbers are great -- and the suffering widespread. Behind the hideous imagery -- of children beaten or sexually abused by parents; ravaged beyond their years by hard living and drug abuse on the streets; maimed by landmines or turned into killers by war; stricken with AIDS -- are the all-too-common struggles against disease, hardship, and family or social traditions that compromise children's humanity or subject them to physical and emotional suffering.
While victims of injustice and poverty have always had trouble being heard, none have had more trouble, historically, than children. Whether exploited as child laborers or prostitutes, drafted as young teenagers into armed forces, forced as young girls into a lonely life as domestic workers, deprived of an education to work on the family farm, or denied adequate nutrition and health care, children need help and protection from an adult world that perpetrates most of the abuse.
Children's rights are the human rights of children with particular attention to the rights of special protection and care afforded to the young, including their right to association with both biological parents, human identity as well as the basic needs for food, universal state-paid education, health care and criminal laws appropriate for the age and development of the child. Interpretations of children's rights range from allowing children the capacity for autonomous action to the enforcement of children being physically, mentally and emotionally free from abuse, though what constitutes "abuse" is a matter of debate. Other definitions include the rights to care and nurturing.

The Children Scotland Act sets out the Rights of all children in Scotland and the responsibility of parents and those legally caring for a child. The Act also covers duties and procedures for public organisations such as Local Councils and Social Work Departments and Children’s Hearing System involved in promoting children’s welfare. The Act puts children first and states the rights of each child to basic standards of care, upbringing and nurture. The foundations for this Act are, each child has the right to be treated as an individual, they have the right to express their views should they wish to do so and that parents should be responsible and share the responsibility of bringing up their child.
I think that this law promotes the rights of children well as throughout the Act the child’s best interests and welfare are the highest priority when their needs are being considered. Evidence: It is important that children, young people, families and communities are free from victimisation, exploitation and abuse because it is written in the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) which the UK signed in 1991.
This states in Article 19 that the Government must take all appropriate action to protect a child from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse, while in the care of parents, legal guardians or any other person who has the care of the child.
Article 32 states that children must be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child’s education, or be to harmful to the child’s health or physical mental, spiritual, moral or social development.
Article 37 states that no child shall be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, nor life imprisonment without possibility of release shall be imposed for offences committed by persons below 18 years of age.

International provisions relating to the protection of children’s rights exist within various
legal systems. For the purpose of this chapter, these legal systems are subdivided into
three levels, namely global, regional and sub-regional. Before turning to the protection of
children’s rights within these levels, however, the paper briefly introduces the application
of international law in Namibia.
The focus within the protection of children’s rights on a global level will be on the legal
framework of the United Nations (UN). Being a member of the UN since 1990, Namibia
is party to many UN Conventions and has shown a strong commitment towards the
protection of children’s rights. Although the UN legal framework offers broad protection
of children’s rights, legal instruments by other global institutions also play a key role in
the field of children’s rights in Namibia, and will therefore be outlined accordingly.

Human Rights can be defined as those basic standards without which people cannot live in dignity as human beings. Human rights are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace. Their respect allows the individual and the community to fully develop. They are "rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled". Human rights are certain moral guarantees that people in all countries and cultures allegedly have simply because they are people. Calling these guarantees “rights” suggests that they attach to particular individuals who can invoke them, that they are of high priority, and that compliance with them is mandatory rather than discretionary.

Human rights are frequently held to be universal in the sense that all people have and should enjoy them, and to be independent in the sense that they exist and are available as standards of justification and criticism whether or not they are recognized and implemented by the legal system or officials of a country.

The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child 1989 – in 1989 the world leaders decided children needed a special convention just for them to give them special care and protection that adults do not need. All children up to the age of 18 have the rights in the convention. Some groups ofchildren eg those living away from home or disabled children have additional rights to make sure they are treated fairly and their needs are met.
Every child in the UK is entitled to 40 specific rights, included in these are: the right to life, survival and development; to have their views respected; to have a name and nationality; freedom of expression, to live in a family environment or alternative care and have contact with parents wherever possible; to have health care and social security; to have an education, be able to take part in leisure, culture and arts; Special protection for refugee children, children in the juvenile justice system, deprived children and children suffering sexual, economic or other forms of exploitation.

Rights tend to be of two general types: those advocating for children as autonomous persons under the law and those placing a claim on society for protection from harms perpetrated on children because of their dependency.
