Beowulf Research Paper
“Power changes everything till it is difficult to say who are the heroes and who the villains.” (Libba Bray). Throughout history there have been many accounts of leader who once had all the power one could dream of, but lost it. Power can be seen in many ways, of course depending on the person. Al Qaeda boss Ayman al-Zawahri is a paradigm of those people who let power corrupt them. Once man is exposed to certain types of power, he is blind to how his decisions can affect the lives of so many other people.

Al-Zawahiri is regarded as Al Qaeda's top boss since the assassination of Osama bin Laden by United States special forces ("Al-Zawahiri appointed al Qaeda's new leader"). Al-Zawahiri is one of the top terrorists the United States has been trying to take down, but has failed six different times to assassinate him (“Newscast: Ayman al-Zawahiri, second in command of Al-Qaeda, will now lead organization”) Al-Zawahiri released, on the 12th anniversary of September 11th, a video urging Muslims, more correctly, those who happen to be terrorists to continue their tactics on American soil. Defense Secretary Robert Gates stated that though al-Zawahiri "is no bin Laden," that Al Qaeda should still be considered a serious threat ("Newscast: Al-Qaeda names Zawahiri as new leader"). The goals in continuous Al Qaeda strikes are to "bleed America economically" and therefore bringing war on American soil; almost as revenge ("Al Qaeda calls for fresh wave of terror"). The urgency of frequent attacks and many on the scale of September 11th was clear. Central reasoning around Al-Zawahiri's revenge involve a concern for his religion and what he believes is essentially, in his eyes, morally correct. When one has the power to correct what he believes is wrong and a group of vulnerable and blind followers, there is no avoiding the rampage that may follow.
