WHY IS TERRORISM AMERICA’S PROBLEM
“You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror” said the previous president of America, George W Bush in 2006. This encapsulates the American war on terrorism. Aimless, flawed and biased. I am of the opinion that terrorism is America’s problem as she has beared most of the cost of it and also because she is to blame for it.
● Terrorism raises the risk and cost of doing business, whether that business is diplomacy, manufacturing, or sales.
● The AP reported in October that nearly 200,000 people were laid off after 9/11, including close to 40,000 in the aerospace industry
● An airline industry spokesman estimated in October that the world’s airlines may have lost as much as $15 billion due to passenger and freight cutbacks
● Terrorism → decrease in tourism for America due to fear. (Boston) ● econ. losses due to infrastructural damages 9/11, the most devastating terrorist attack in modern history, had a direct cost of roughly $27 billion(cripples econ.)
Terrorism has impacted the psychological well being of Americans, leaves people traumatised ● About 11 percent of kids surveyed who were at the marathon finish line suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, according to research conducted within the six months after the bombings, trauma experts say. That’s about six times higher than the PTSD rate in kids who weren’t at the site of the April 15, 2013 attack that killed three people and injured 264, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. (BOSTON)
● These studies have investigated the immediate economic damage caused by terrorism, and the effect on variables such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the tourism industry.Even 9/11, the most devastating terrorist attack in modern history, had a direct cost of roughly $27 billion.

September 11 is a tragic event and an unforgettable day to Americans. Nineteen
terrorists seized four commercial U.S jets and crashed them into American symbols of the
military and capitalism, and shook the entire nation. The attack did change Americans,
mostly for a short while, but it did make huge impacts in America.
The Mindset of Americans
Americans became closer, more spiritual, less materialistic, but only for a while. In spite of terror and grief, Americans with utmost hope and compassion helped the person in need. They prayed together and stood together. The attacks of September 11 have made some people feel insecure, particularly the ones who lost their loved ones. Appreciation, gratitude, and support to the fire fighters, the army, and to the people who protect the country have increased.[Ostroushko] Even the pop songs in TV stopped for few days. Patriotic albums were released, such as “The Rising” by Springsteen and “Freedom” by Paul McCartney. People who were obsessed with who is at the top of music charts and new releases got interested in news and the world around them. Also, the blood donation rapidly increased following the attacks, showing the feeling of sympathy felt by Americans.[Glynn] For the most part, it was an awakening for these people; September 11 showed that, for the first...
...Social Problems in America
Many of Americans today do not take the time to realize that our nation is little by little falling apart. Our leaders are corrupt, our environment is being destroyed, and there are thousands of children being born each day. The three major social problems facing the American citizens in the 21st century are births to unmarried woman, being able to trust or government and or leaders, and lastly destroying the environment.
The first major social problem facing America today is the crisis of births to unmarried woman. In "Straight Line to Calamity" George Will writes, "rising illegitimacy is a self-reinforcing trend because of the many mechanisms of the intergenerational transmission of poverty. The principal one is: People tend to parent as they were parented."(228). During the 60's and 70's a lot of people were having unprotected sex. This age in time most people were not worried about getting pregnant so they didn't wear a condom to stop the pregnancies. This led to many unwanted pregnancies at early ages for girls. They were bringing up children when they were barley coming out of their teens. As the children were growing up, as Will states, the children were following in the parent's footsteps. Most young parents really do not understand how to raise a child properly, meaning that they would raise their children the
“Evolving of America in 1950’s”
While some may argue that there could have been a more important phase in American history, but the truth remains that the1950’s was the most impactful era as we saw higher industrial growth, changes in culture and growing disparities between rich and poor.
My topic for this research project is the “Evolving of America in 1950’s”. This era is not just an event in the history but it’s a phase created as a combinations of various events like growth of industry and economy, changes in the life styles, modes of entertainment, automobile revolution, move to the suburbs and also the widening of disparities between the rich and the poor which touch on every aspect of creation of the American Dream. It is something, which not just impacted the life in history then, but to a large extent continues till today to determine our lifestyles.
Body Paragraph #1:
Main Argument of the paragraph: “Industrial Growth”
Argument 1 Quote 1
“Between 1950 and 1955 the number of women employees in the US workforce grew by 40%. The developments made US a more secure nation whose citizens were concerned increasingly with aspirations and notions of success.” (Schwartz, Pg. #)
Although women began to work since the forties when the men went to war, even after the war was over the women continued to work and hence the...
...The Effects of Poverty in America
SOC 203: Social Problems
Instructor: Sharon Chappelle
January 23, 2012
Poverty is one of the largest epidemics going on in the United States. There is a lot that comes with poverty including homelessness, unemployment, and hunger. These three problems are all linked together which causes the big problem of people living in poverty. One of the largest causes of poverty in this day and age is the countries recession. The people living in poverty have feelings of abandonment, helplessness, and embarrassment. Poverty is one of the hardest things people go through today in life and it is growing so fast that people are too oblivious to see it. Most people have their own opinions and views about poverty but we have been learning about the views and opinions of three groups of individuals. They are the symbolic interactionists, functionalists, and conflict theorists. While some people in America may be taking steps to end poverty others probably don’t care who is living in poverty because it is not them. Society can intervene and help the people who are living in poverty by increasing affordable housing, increasing job opportunities, and by increasing access to education and training opportunities. All these approaches can lead to more jobs which allow the people who live in poverty to provide for their families.

The Problem with Exotic Pets in America
Gilles C. Haun
Many Americans love to have exotic pets, not thinking of the consequences of ownership. Right now there is a widespread problem in America: In places such as Florida, numerous types of exotic pets are becoming an invasive species as a result of being released back into the wild.
The Problem with Exotic Pets in America.
Exotic pets have always been a concern to a variety of people: health care officials who treat bites from these animals, insurance companies who have to cover businesses that employ performers who have live exotic animals in their acts (such as ‘Siegfried and Roy’), and customs agents who inspect cargo ships for illegal animals just to name a few. The problem however, has taken a turn for the worse recently as a result of several things which have occurred not just in the past year, but also in the past decade. Exotic animals are becoming a problem in the US and a hazard to people, pets, and livestock. Some background information will now be provided.
Almost everyone above the age of 20 remembers what happened to Roy Horn of ‘Siegfried and Roy’ when Montecere, the tiger Roy was working with, bit him on the neck and dragged him away. This brought into focus the warning about “you can take the animal out of the wild, but you can’t take the wild out of the...
...Many people believe that there is a crisis in the educational system in America right now. People are especially worried about the low scores that high school seniors recently received after taking an international placement test. The U.S. was ranked very low in comparison to forty other industrialized nations. Because of this, a large group of politicians and educators want to increase the standards expected by high schools for their students. However, there are several reasons why this sort of change would be difficult for schools to accomplish. There is some question about whether or not these test scores truly reflect the mathematical abilities of today's students. Two of the bigger problems expected originate from the issues of public school funding and child poverty, although there are several other factors contributing to the problem.
The tests are taken by fourth graders, eighth graders, and twelfth graders. The children in the lower grades scored higher nationally within their respective test levels than the high school students, but the scores were still fairly low. Students were tested in four subjects: general mathematics, general science, advanced mathematics, and physics. In general mathematics, "American 12th graders did better than those in only two countries, Cyprus and South Africa" (Times 1998:2). In physics and advanced mathematics, "no country performed more poorly" (Times 1998: 2). Because the...

THE PROBLEMS OF OBESITY IN AMERICA
Becoming educated about obesity can change your health and your outlook in life. People take day to day life for granted. They eat what they want when they want and how much they want. But the only thing wrong with this is that you don’t know how much damage you are doing to your health and body.
This article is by Kretsch, Molly. Agricultural Research. Mar2006, Vol. 54 Issue 3, p2-2. 1p.
She discusses many cases of obesity in the U.S since 2006. She explains if you see your doctor or health care provider early you can prevent becoming obese if caught on time and teach you how to be healthy.
